How to Add a Podcast RSS Feed to Your Listening App

Add a personal podcast by RSS URL in Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or Podcast Addict, then troubleshoot missing artwork, episodes, and feed refreshes.

Short answer: Copy the podcast's complete RSS URL, open the add-or-follow screen in your podcast app, choose the option to follow a show by URL or RSS feed, and paste the URL. The show should then appear in your library without being listed in the app's public directory.

Before you add the feed

An RSS feed is the delivery address for a podcast. A personal feed does not need to appear in a public podcast directory: compatible apps can follow its URL directly and check it for new episodes.

Copy the full URL from your podcast dashboard. Do not paste an episode page or an audio-file URL. Treat a personal feed URL like an access link and avoid posting it publicly.

Apple Podcasts on iPhone or iPad

Apple requires the URL to return a valid podcast RSS feed. On a Mac, the equivalent command is File, then Follow a Show by URL.

  1. 1Open Apple Podcasts and go to Library.
  2. 2Open the More menu and choose Follow a Show by URL.
  3. 3Paste the complete RSS URL, then tap Follow.

Overcast

Overcast documents that listeners can subscribe directly to a feed URL. Feeds recognized as private are excluded from search and recommendations, so absence from search does not mean the subscription failed.

  1. 1Open Add Podcast and choose Add URL.
  2. 2Paste the RSS URL and confirm the subscription.
  3. 3Look for the show in your subscribed podcasts rather than public search.

Pocket Casts

Pocket Casts warns against sharing a personal feed URL in a public support forum. If the app returns a short URL after parsing the feed, use that result to open the show in the app.

  1. 1Open Podcasts or Discover and paste the complete feed URL into the search field.
  2. 2If Pocket Casts asks you to submit the feed, mark it private when that option is available.
  3. 3Open the result and follow it. A newly submitted feed can take a few minutes to become available.

Podcast Addict

  1. 1Tap the plus button on the main screen, then choose RSS feed.
  2. 2Paste the feed URL. Leave authentication off unless the provider gave you a separate username and password.
  3. 3Mark the feed private when offered, validate it, and subscribe.

If episodes do not appear

  • Check that you copied the feed URL, not the dashboard URL or a single MP3 link.
  • Open the feed URL in a browser. A 404, sign-in page, or HTML error page means the app cannot parse it either.
  • Give a newly added feed a few minutes, then refresh it inside the app.
  • Confirm that the podcast has a published episode. A valid but empty feed may appear without anything to play.
  • If one app fails, test the same URL in another compatible app. That distinguishes a feed problem from an app-specific parser or cache problem.

What about Spotify?

Do not assume that every arbitrary personal feed can be pasted directly into Spotify. Spotify documents private RSS listening for feeds connected through supported subscription providers, while open podcast apps expose a general add-by-URL flow. Use Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or Podcast Addict when direct RSS subscription is the requirement.
